'm kristen sze. police standoff continues on treasure island. ramps to the island from the bay bridge are closed now. it began before midnight when police began chasing a suspect. amy hollyfield is live near the scene. >> reporter: let me get out of the way so you can see what the traffic situation looks like this is the upper deck, westbound traffic moving okay there is an officer positioned overthere, across the lanes of traffic blocking the off-ramp to get on to treasure island, no one is allowed on or off. residents are stuck. we have pictures of some people who are stuck in san francisco one man took these pictures for us, these are treasure island residents who can't go home, they are getting help from the red cross. they don't have shelter, they don't have food. police have the island shutdown because they are negotiating with a man who they say has a gun and they say he's suicidal. they've got him surrounded on land and water. they've got coast guard officers on boats in case he heads out into the bay. right now he has left his car but he's on the shoreline police say he's thr

. good morning, i'm cheryl jennings. >>> and i'm kristen sze. that mess happened in the hillside park neighborhood along lausanne avenue. we have live coverage from amy hollyfield. >> reporter: the water main ruptured 5:45 this morning unleashing 45,000 gallons of water. it rushed down hill into a daly city neighborhood and brought the hill with it. mud filled streets and built a disgusting wall around several cars. concerned police officers ran from door-to-door to wake up the neighborhood. >> they ran at 5 in the morning several times and i woke up what is going on. they are like there's a mudslide you have to evacuate. >> reporter: members of the wong family had no idea how long they would be out of their home they packed two days worth of clothing and tried to navigate through the mud and water at 5:00 in the morning with suitcases. >> they said there's an evacuation center across the street from our house we couldn't get there because of the mud. >> reporter: when the sun came up she saw her car halfway covered in mud, sinking by the minute. >> it makes me want to cry it was my f
>> cheryl: i'm cheryl jennings. >> kristen: i'm kristen sze. breaking news. a man is in custody for trying to bring suspicious items on a flight. >> cheryl: let's go to vic lee with details. >> reporter: to put it simply third, caught a passenger that may have been carrying components of a bomb. authorities are taking this very seriously. a source close to the investigation tells "abc 7 news" that this happened about 8:00 last night. this is what our sources are telling us. the man has a southern california address. he tried to board a southwest flight to los angeles. he was going through the checkpoint here when tsa inspectors noticed suspicious items in the bin where he put his carry-on bag. they found components of an ide. an improvised explosive device, a watch with wires, fuses and a toggle switch. all the components were there except for the explosives. they then look at his boots and he suffered layers into his boots just like the shoe bomber richard reid had done. they notified sheriff's deputies who took him into custody. they examined the material. the f.b.i. was notif

'm kristen sze the military is bringing in help to restore power for victims of sandy. >>> from california to new york loaded with equipment and crews. let's look at pictures of devastation to homes and businesses on the new jersey shore overwhelming. millions of homes are without power. pg&e is helping to provide some of the equipment. the death toll is at least 70. people living in the damaged areas are going to need that help right away. it should arrive sometime this afternoon. katie marzullo is going to join news a moment. look at these live pictures. you can see so many homes have been devastated. the weather came up over the new jersey shore. people have a long way to go for recovery. >> reporter: the defense department says it is flying 17 aircraft from california to new york, that aircraft is loaded with power generation equipment that is going to help crews get the lights back. utility officials in new york say they are on track to get the power back in manhattan by saturday. wheels of recovery are turning slowly. look at the line for buses in brooklyn, six blocks long and growin

'm kristen sze. gunfire shocks people out of their sleep in a menlo park neighborhood early this morning. . >> amy hollyfield joins us with more on the developing story. >> reporter: i just spoke with the police chief he says his officers can't believe the artillery they found in the home. there were automatic weapons in there, one had a clip that would hold 100 rounds it was loaded. what they had far out-powers what the police have. they got the call 4:30 this morning to go to the neighborhood. police found four people inside the home. they also found marijuana, guns and a lot of ammunition. they arrested four people and say two are confirmed members of the taliban gang here menlo park. there's a shooting in that neighborhood a week ago which also involved the taliban gang. police say they a gang problem in the bell haven neighborhood. >> we put extra bike patrols out, we are going to be putting extra foot patrols in the area. we have to see what happens next. we are taking it very serious. >> reporter: police held a town hall meeting about this issue. they had a good turnout, people ar
